The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program

If you live in the counties of Los Angeles or San Francisco you could be entitled to purchase low cost, reduced limit, automobile liability coverage through the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCAIP).

Your eligibility for this program is dependent on a number of factors including:

  • Household Income
  • Driving Record (accidents and violations)
  • Vehicle Purchased Value

In principle though, if you have been a “good driver”, that is someone who has been licensed for at least three consecutive years and has no more than one point on their driving record, then you may be entitled to join the program.

Certain major violations may be considered for periods of seven years, such as a DUI (Driving under the Influence) conviction. Getting in the CLCAIP is a great place to be as all auto insurance companies licensed in California are required to sell coverage to good drivers and if you are refused you can take action against them via the California Department of Insurance.

The CLCAIP also clearly establishes under what circumstances an auto insurer can cancel or refuse to renew your policy once it has been issued:

  • Fraud or misrepresentation
  • Non-payment of the premium
  • Substantial increase in the hazard insured against.

Perhaps best of all though is that as a registered “good driver” your insurance premiums could be at least 20% lower than regular rates.

The CLCAIP is administered by The California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan (CAARP).
