SR22 Insurance is a document used by some state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices to provide proof that a driver has the minimum liability insurance coverage required by that state. You are often required to file an SR22 to the DMV if you have been caught driving without insurance, committed a serious driving violation such as DUI, or your licence has suspended.
If you are instructed by the Courts to file an SR22 via your insurer, the aim is to demonstrate that you are being financially responsible, and that you carry the legal minimum insurance coverage for your state. Once successfully filed to the DMV your license suspension can be lifted and you can driver legally again, though you will need to carry an SR22 for three years. If you can complete that period without any further violations and maintain an insurance policy that meets the legal state minimum requirements, then the SR22 status will expire. Your insurer is legally bound to notify the DMV, if you cancel your policy at any point during the SR22 period.
SR22 requirements are state specific indeed some states such as New Mexico, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania don’t require it all. It is important to note however that if you have SR22 Insurance, then even if you move to a state that doesn’t need it, you will still be required to meet the SR22 requirements of your previous home state.
